Wayside Youth & Family Support Network’s Guimel DeCarvalho Named Emerging Leader by the Association for Behavioral Healthcare

NEWTON, MA – Wayside Youth & Family Support Network’s Director of People and Culture, Guimel DeCarvalho, received the 2019 Elizabeth Funk Emerging Leader Award from the Association for Behavioral Healthcare (ABH) today at the association’s annual Salute to Excellence event.

The Elizabeth Funk Emerging Leader Award is given to individuals who have shown a commitment to behavioral health by demonstrating leadership within the field, motivating staff and communicating effectively as a developing leader.

The award is named for Elizabeth (Betty) Funk who served as President and CEO of the formerly named Mental Health and Substance Abuse Corporations of Massachusetts, Inc. until 2007.

“Guimel DeCarvalho is a wonderful blend of someone who is relentless in raising the bar, while having great respect for the challenges involved,” said Eric L. Masi, Ed.D, President & CEO of Wayside. “Guimel is both steadfast and passionate about recruiting a diverse staff, embedding equity and inclusion across our agency and challenging people to be courageous when talking about race and their own implicit biases.”

DeCarvalho’s leadership resulted in Wayside training more than 400 staff on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) principles including having “courageous conversations” about race and racism. Wayside increased its managers of color from 27 percent to 35 percent and decreased staff experiencing bias from 24 percent to 6 percent.

“It’s an honor to be recognized by the Association for Behavioral Healthcare as this year’s Elizabeth Funk Emerging Leader,” said DeCarvalho. “It is especially meaningful that Wayside’s commitment to Diversity, Equity & Inclusion is valued by ABH and its members statewide.”

DeCarvalho received the Emerging Leader award at ABH’s Salute to Excellence event at the Boston Marriott in Newton, Mass.
